How to Make the Job Search Not So Scary

The job search process can be overwhelming and scary at times…but it doesn’t have to be. In honor of Halloween, let’s look at some tricks and treats to help make the job search less frightening!

Resume
Be sure your resume is updated and recent with all employment information and dates, no typos, misspellings, or grammatical errors. Your resume is your first impression – make it a good one.

Research
Research potential openings as well as the company fully before applying. Research LinkedIn profiles of current employees for potential mutual connections for internal referrals or to spark a conversation for added information; review company social postings, website “About” pages, mission statements, etc. to gather insight on company culture and initiatives; review job description in detail to determine if the position is truly a fit for your experience. The more you understand the company and role, the more confident you’ll feel applying.

Organization
Keep track of the companies you have applied to, the recruiters you speak with, and the connections you make. We suggest a spreadsheet, calendar scheduling (Calendly, Google Calendar, Notion, etc.), or maybe just old-fashioned pen to paper. Whatever works best for you!

Networking
Networking is one of the most powerful job search strategies. It can give you access to job opportunities not posted publicly and potentially roles that are not even open yet. The more you connect with your network and let others know you’re seeking opportunities, the greater your chances of discovering something that is a potential great fit!

Positivity
It may be hard at times but, remember to celebrate the small wins and stay consistent in activity bringing you closer to your goal. Acknowledge your progress, whether it’s landing an informational conversation, an interview, receiving positive feedback or tips from former coworkers or peers, or simply making a new connection. These moments of achievement can boost your motivation and remind you that you’re on the right path, even when challenges arise. Regardless of how scary it may seem, stay positive and keep pushing forward! Your next career adventure is right around the corner.
